SPAIN’S MOYANO PULLS AHEAD BY ONE IN SWEDISH STROKEPLAY AS THUNDERSTORMS CAUSE WEATHER DELAY

Spain’s Clara Moyano Reigosa has the solo lead at the Swedish Strokeplay on a day where play was halted for about an hour due to thunderstorms in the area.

The 27-year-old fired a three-under 70 to improve to six-under for the tournament, one shot ahead of the trio of Sweden’s Emelie Borggren (69), Denmark’s Cecilie Leth-Nissen (71) and Venezuela’s first-round leader Vanessa Gilly (73).

Moyano, who finds herself leading a LET Access Series (LETAS) event for the first time in her four years as a professional, is relishing the opportunity to pick up her first piece of silverware.

“It will mean a lot,” she said. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work, especially in the last few years, it hasn’t been really easy.

“I could see it every week, how the game was there, even during practice rounds, but I just couldn’t put it all together throughout the whole round.

“I just needed to be able to put it together for more than 18 holes. Winning will just be the cherry on top of everything that I’ve been doing with my coaches.”

During her four years on Tour, Moyano’s best finish came in 2022 at the Terre Blanche Ladies Open when she finished in third place.

She teed off at 2.28pm, two shots behind overnight leader Gilly, and played her front nine one-over-par mixing one birdie with two bogeys.

Play was then halted at about 5.30pm, while she was standing over her second shot on the par-5 10th.

“I was just chilling in the clubhouse with Maria (Hernandez) talking about life,” she said. “We were kinda surprised with how much water we got, because it was supposed to rain but not that much.

“This storm was actually a surprise. We were just looking how people were taking videos out of the clubhouse.”

Taking advantage of the calmer conditions when play resumed at 6.40pm, the Spaniard birdied holes 10, 11, 13 and 16 to charge up the leaderboard.

Moyano added: “I think after the rain the wind calmed down a little bit, so it was more straightforward, everything. I was playing pretty solid, kept giving myself opportunities and the putts dropped.

“I will try to get my head out of everything, get some good sleep and do the same thing tomorrow.”

Unlike Moyano, Gilly was negatively impacted by the weather delay and made a double bogey straight after play resumed on hole 16.

Gilly, whose round also comprised three birdies and one bogey, said: “I kind of felt cold, but I’m taking the positives. My game still felt like yesterday, I know the score is different, but it still felt like I was hitting the ball really solid and my putting was good.

“My cousin is here to see me, so I was just talking to her and did not grab my phone at all in that hour.”

Leth-Nissen, who mixed five birdies with three bogeys, is also one shot behind and chasing her second LETAS victory.

She held the 36-hole lead at the season-opening Madaef Golfs Ladies Open but fell behind eventual winner Caroline Sturdza.

“I think it’s less pressure this time,” Leth-Nissen said. “I’ll be a little bit more free to go do my own thing tomorrow. It was a lot of birdies and a lot of bogeys, but I felt like I was good at keeping momentum when I played well.”

Sweden’s Borggren is in the three-way tie for second place after shooting a four-under 69 on moving day.

“It just felt good today,” she said. “I hit the irons very good and made some putts as well. I have had a couple of tough years, so it’s finally paying off, all the hard work, so that’s very nice.

“I’m just gonna try to play like I did today and focus on what went good today.”

Another stroke adrift, the duo of Wales’ Ffion Tynan (73) and Denmark’s Sarah Skovgaard Bils (72) are at four-under for the tournament.

Tailing close behind, at three-under overall, are the pair of last week’s PGA Championship winner Elsa Svensson (71) and Norway’s Silje Torvund Ohma (70).

Sixty-two players will return on Friday to compete for the trophy with the cut line set at four-over.

Round 3 resumes at 8.00am (local time) tomorrow.
