Austria’s Katharina Muehlbauer fired a round of 67 on day two of the Flumserberg Ladies Open to climb up the leaderboard and have a share of the lead with one round to go.
Muehlbauer headed into the second day on one-under-par but produced a sensational round to move to six-under-par at Gams-Werdenberg Golf Club.
“It is the first time I have been in the lead in a professional tournament, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow and being in the last group,” said Muehlbauer.
“I’m going to do the same as the last two days and just be patient with the birdies and enjoying the round. I have played here plenty of times here, I have some family members who live close to the border, so it is feeling like home. My mum, dad and boyfriend will be coming to watch me.”
The Austrian rolled in back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes to make the turn in 34, she made three further birdies before dropping a shot on 17 but bounced back with a birdie on 18.
“Hitting the fairways was key because it’s quite narrow and when you don’t, it is quite deep rough. I hit the greens and putted really good today. I started having birdie chances, I made a long putt on three and then a shorter one on four. It was another shorter putt on 10, but 12 and 15 were longer ones. Unfortunately, one bogey on 17 when I was in front of a tree and had to chip out of the rough, but I made birdie on the last hole too,” said Muehlbauer, who turned professional in January 2020.
Alongside Muehlbauer at the summit of the leaderboard on six-under-par is Czech golfer Kristyna Napoleaova and German amateur Charlotte Back, after the duo shot rounds of 69 and 70 respectively.
Four players sit one stroke behind the leaders on five-under-par including Belgium’s Charlotte De Corte, French amateur Charlotte Liautier, India’s Amandeep Drall and Denmark’s Fie Olsen.
England’s Rachael Goodall and Thalia Martin both fired rounds of 69 to be sit T8 after two days alongside Russia’s Nina Pegova and amateur Chiara Noja.
