Russia’s Nina Pegova produced another excellent round as she shot a 67 on the second day of the Santander Golf Tour Zaragoza to lead by three strokes.
The 27-year-old led by one stroke overnight having carded an opening round of 66 and followed that with 67 to be 11-under-par after the second round.
Pegova, who leads the LETAS Order of Merit, only dropped one shot, rolling in five birdies including four on the front nine to take a three-stroke lead heading into the last day.
“Today the greens were more difficult and faster compared to yesterday. All areas of my game were more or less good, which helped me maintain my quality of golf,” she said.
“My approach was good today so the birdies on holes five and 10 were because of my approach shot. I made a birdie on the long par-3 15th where the line of my tee shot was good, but I hit it a bit short and then holed the putt from 5m.”
With places into Final Qualifying for this year’s AIG Women’s Open up for grabs, Pegova is anticipating a good final round.
She added: “I can see from the scores that everyone is in a good shape, so I am expecting an interesting final day.”
England’s Rachael Goodall sits in second place in the leaderboard on eight-under-par after shooting two rounds of 68 in Zaragoza.
The two-time LETAS winner produced another solid round where she made six birdies and two bogeys.
Goodall said: “I had a good day today, I played well and got off to a good start with a birdie on the first. I got on a run in the middle with birdies on holes 8, 9, 12 and 13 where I hit really close shots in. I was a bit disappointed at the end because I missed from three feet on the par-3 15th for birdie. Hopefully, I can make more birdies tomorrow.”
French amateur Agathe Laisne, who won twice on LETAS in 2020, is in third place on seven-under-par after carding a round of 67.
While Scotland’s Gabrielle Macdonald, who sits third in the 2021 Order of Merit, also posted a round of 67 and sits in fourth place on six-under-par.
One shot further back are five players who are tied fifth after two rounds including Australia’s Amy Walsh, Spanish amateur Miriam Ayora, Peru’s Maria Palacios, Japan’s Tomoko Yokoyama and Germany’s Verena Gimmy.
Palacios said: “I played really well from tee to green. I think the key to scoring well is to know the greens and the shot into the green is crucial to leave yourself good birdie opportunities. Tomorrow I hope to keep playing at the same level, keep myself calm and try keep hydrated. The course is in excellent condition.”
