Leena Makkonen
Finland’s Leena Makkonen shot a two under par 70, to lead the Azores Ladies Open at Golf De Batalha on Sao Miguel Island.
Makkonen played consistent golf with matching nines of 35 shots. It’s the first time the Finn has lead an event on the LET Access Series and admitted to being a little nervous towards the end of her round. Makkonen will be hoping to emulate fellow Finn Sanna Nuutinen, who won last week’s NordicTrack Open de Strasbourg in France.
The 29 year-old will be chased tomorrow by Spain’s Luna Sobron, Astrid Vayson de Pradenne of France and Swede Sarah Nilsson, who all shot 72..
Sobron turned professional a week ago and will hope to add another win to her season and improve her current 7th place on the LETAS rankings.
At the end of the year the top 5 players will progress on to the Ladies European Tour, with the next 15 players progressing directly to the final stage of LET Lalla Aicha Tour School in Morocco.
Vayson de Pradenne had a round of two contrasting nines, recording three birdies on her front side and three bogeys on the back. Nilsson is in her first year as a professional and will be hoping to emulate her sister, Emma, by winning on the LET Access Series.
The second round will commence at 9.30am from both the 1st and 10th tees.
