Denmark’s Amalie Leth-Nissen has led the LETAS Order of Merit since the start of the season after she clinched her maiden professional victory at the season opener in Terre Blanche.
After four tournaments, the 20-year-old holds a slim lead on the rankings of 77.25 points and she is looking to stay there.
Last season, Leth-Nissen finished seventh in Avila on seven-under-par thanks to a low scoring final day of 66 (-6).
Speaking about returning to Avila, Leth-Nissen said: “I’m pretty excited. I really loved it here last year. It was just my sister and I out here and it’s the same again this year.
“There are a lot of opportunities on this course. For me its about having a good game plan and then just believing in yourself.
“Last year I got four consecutive birdies so they can come whenever out there.
“We know this course and we know that we can shoot low. I hope it will be my week.”
Leth-Nissen’s older sister Cecilie also plays on Tour and finished tied third on 12 under par.
“A few places this year, Dad or Mum won’t be with us and its not a bad thing as I can spend quality time with my sister.”
Leth-Nissen turned professional after securing a place on the 2023 Ladies European Tour in December 2022 at the age of 18. As an amateur she rose as high as number six in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
After losing her LETAS status in 2023, Leth-Nissen wants to finish top seven on the Order of Merit by the end of the season to earn back her full LET playing rights.
“It’s pretty good to be at the top but for me all that matters is that I’m there by the end of the year.
“I’m just trying to focus on each shot at each tournament and then I will be where I am at the end of the year.”
Leth-Nissen tees it up at 9:15am local time alongside Switzerland’s Natalie Armbruester and England’s Hayley Davis.
The Santander Golf Tour-Avila is a 54-hole stroke play competition, with a cut to the top 45 professionals and ties after 36 holes. Play begins on Thursday 28th of May.
