German amateur Helen Briem secured her first victory at a professional event, one week after losing out on the win at the LET’s Dormy Open Helsingborg in a play-off.
Briem came into the final day three-shots behind day two leader Kelsey Bennett and showed she meant business by rolling in a birdie on the first hole.
Two more birdies and two bogeys on the front nine put her in a strong position heading into the back nine where she kept her cool with a birdie on the 14th.
The 18th hole was where Briem shone, rolling in an 18-foot putt to secure victory.
“It’s a great win. I’m so happy to finally win a professional event as an amateur. I’ve had lots of second places so to finally cross the line is great.
“To have that final putt drop is great.”
Briem was accompanied by her father, Jochen on the bag and credits him for the win too.
“This week has been very relaxed. My Dad and I took a trip to Andorra after the first round and slept there and drove back yesterday. That was also a highlight of this week.
As a two-time Ping Junior Solheim Cup winner and as of the time of writing, fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Briem has already made her mark in the golfing world but is excited to now tick another goal off the list. Her big goal is to compete in the Olympics.
“Yesterday was very interesting and perhaps the wildest 70 of my life, but last week taught me that I was very capable of winning today.
“I usually prefer the position of chasing and it worked in my favour today.
“My plan is to play a few LET Access events, some amateur events and hopefully earn my LET card this year.”
Switzerland’s Tiffany Arafi finished second on six-under-par and walked away with the winner’s cheque.
Overnight leader Australia’s Kelsey Bennett had a tough back nine and finished solo third on five-under-par whilst 2021 winner Marine Griffaut finished fourth in her professional debut alongside France’s Ariane Klotz and England’s Amy Taylor.
Italy’s Erika De Martini, Netherland’s Lauren Holmey, Sweden’s Isabell Elkstrom and England’s Billie-Jo Smith all finished tied seventh on par.
LETAS now moves to the Czech Republic for the Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge which begins on Friday 14th.
