Mireia Prat
Spain’s Mireia Prat shot a second round 65, 5 under par, to take a two shot lead from Australia’s Bree Arthur at the Ocho Golf Ladies Open in Panton, Spain.
On a warm and sunny day, Prat had the best of starts with five birdies in the first eight holes. The 23 year old from Barcelona birdied the 13th before dropping her only shot of the day on the following hole to shoot the second lowest round of the week. Prat who has started the season strongly, currently lying 4th on the Order of Merit, will be looking for her first win on the LET Access Series on Friday.
Australia’s Bree Arthur, who heads off to play in the LET’s Turkish Airlines Ladies Open next week, started slowly, with bogeys on the 2nd and 3rd holes before a string of four birdies in the next six holes helped her to reach 4 under par. A disappointing double bogey on the 12th slowed the 24 year old’s progress but two birdies in the last five holes moved her to within two shots of Prat.
Spain’s Carmen Alonso shot the low round of the week, 64 on a golf course, which does not particularly suit the long hitting Spaniard. Alonso is choosing wisely as to which holes she can hit her driver and her clever play took her to 3 under for the tournament and third position.
Overnight leader Margarita Ramos stumbled on the second day, finding it difficult to get any momentum going, shooting a disappointing two over par, 74 to lie in fourth place. Joint overnight leader Christine Wolf also found it tough going, shooting 75 leaving her in fifth place on her own.
Forty-two players, 35 professionals and seven amateurs made the cut, which fell at five over par. The final round will commence at 8.30 tomorrow morning with the highest placed player not otherwise exempt, earning a place in the LET’s Open de Espana Feminino, which takes place at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid, from the 18 – 21 July.
