Austria’s Christine Wolf became the Crete Ladies Open champion, beating the Netherland’s Chrisje de Vries in a one-hole play off in the weather shortened Crete Ladies Open on Tuesday. The first two days were cancelled due to strong winds making the Crete Golf Course unplayable.
This week Wolf, shooting a 67, 4 under par, was playing in just her second event as a professional and although the event was shortened to 18 holes because of the difficult weather conditions, the young Austrian was delighted with her victory. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet, I am so happy.”
Teeing off from the 10th tee, Wolf started strongly with birdies on the 12th, 16th and 18th holes for an outward nine of 33. Chrisje de Vries teeing off over an hour earlier, had posted a clubhouse leading 67 but Wolf, with the assistance of new live scoring technology used during the tournament, was able to see the leaderboard on her personal scoring device, knowing that she had to hole a 3 metre putt on her final hole, the 9th, to draw level with de Vries.
On the first play-off hole, both players hit the 347 yard par 4 18th in regulation. Wolf holed a 3 metre putt and de Vries, facing a putt from a metre and a half, saw her putt slip agonisingly by the hole.
Italy’s Vittoria Valvassori finished in third place on her own, shooting a 2 under par, 69, with 9 players tied for fourth on even par, including talented young English golfer, Charley Hull who will head to LET Tour School in December.
The final LETAS event of the season, the Banesto Tour Valencia, will take place from the 8 – 10 November at GC Escorpion in Valencia.
