Switzerland’s Caroline Rominger, Daniela Prorokova from the Czech Republic and German amateur Franziska Friedrich are tied for the lead at 2 under par after the first round of the Azores Ladies Open at Golf de Batalha.
Rominger, currently ranked 7th in the LETAS ranking is hoping to improve her position this week with the top five firmly in her sights. It is the first time the Swiss has competed in the Azores Ladies Open and she will be hoping to secure her first win on LETAS this week.
“I played really well today, it was an easy day game, as like in golf, hitting many fairways and greens. Of course I could have had less putts, but it was good, “said the Swiss who made five top-ten in the last seven tournaments she has played, including two top-3 finishes.
“I liked the course, it was like being on holiday, beautiful views, lots of trees and flowers. I liked the dark sand bunkers, I’ve seen before in Tenerife. I am playing well. On this golf course it’s important to hit all types of shots. It is important to hit drives in the fairway, because there is not much room on the sides”, commented Rominger.
With nine of the top ten ranked players competing this week, there is strong competition for the order of merit points on offer. Top placed Emma Westin opened with a three over par, 75, to be tied for 11th position. Second ranked Lina Boqvist shot a one over par, 73, to lie in 8th place, with third ranked Isabella Ramsay 18th at four over par.
Sixteen-year-old amateur Leonar Guimaraes Bessa was the best placed Portuguese player with an opening 74 (+2) to be tied 9th.
