Luna Sobrón
Spain’s Luna Sobrón maintained her advantage on the second day of the Ribeira Sacra “Patrimonio de la Humanidad” International Ladies Open at Augas Santas Balneario Golf & Resort, with an even par round of 70 and a two round total of 5 under par, 135.
The 21-year-old amateur from Mallorca will go into the final day holding a two shot advantage over fellow countrywoman Maria Palacios (67), with three players, Michele Thomson from Scotland, the Netherland’s Anne Van Dam and Finn Krista Bakker, a further shot back at 2 under par, 132.
Sobrón, found the going a little tougher today with a less than straight forward round. She commented, “It wasn’t as tidy today, having to get up and down a few times, especially with a great bogey on the 7th hole, including a ball in the water off the tee. Then I made a great birdie on the 9th, which helped me to recover my confidence.” Despite a difficult second round, Sobrón was looking forward to the final day. “I will continue to play my game, calmly and trying to play like yesterday, and at the end of the day, we’ll see what happens.”
Maria Palacios, finished her round with a flourish, recording three birdies in her final three holes and was upbeat about her day. “I played solidly throughout the day, with the luck that the weather was kind to us and didn’t rain all day. I had some bad holes yesterday and today I concentrated better and I had a very determined attitude all the way. Tomorrow we’ll see what happens if the weather is with us and then see if I am still up there.”
The morning starters again had the best of the day’s weather without a hint of wind. Van Dam (69) and Bakker (68), made the most of it, posting their scores early. Thomson played in the more difficult conditions on her way to a round of 69.
Finn Saana Nuutinen (67) and Spanish amateur Natalia Escuriola (69) are tied for 6th place, with Spain’s Mireia Prat (73), Piti Martinez Bernal (69) and Germany’s Isi Gabsa (72) in a tie for 8th.
Forty-two professionals and two amateurs made the cut, which fell at 6 over par. Play will commence at 8.30am on Friday morning. The final day’s weather forecast is for more difficult conditions with rain showers throughout the day.
