Spain’s Luna Sobron claimed her first LETAS title with a narrow one shot win over France’s Lucie Andre, at the Terre Blanche Resort, in the south of France.
The 21-year-old amateur admitted to feeling very nervous at the start of her final round but was able to right the ship and play solidly to tip toe over the line one shot ahead of the chasing Andre.
Sobron never lost her lead, which was a comfortable three shots over her fellow countrywoman, Maria Parra at the start of the final 18 holes. Three bogeys on the 1st, 3rd and 5th holes unsettled Sobron but a birdie on the 6th eased her nerves.
“This morning I was very nervous, the first four holes were very bad but the birdie on the 6th calmed me down.”
Sobron, currently ranked 7th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, birdied the par five 9th to stay two shots ahead of playing partner, Maria Parra, who double bogeyed the short par four 5th. France’s Lucie Andre made a charge on the front nine with a birdie at the par five 4th and an eagle on the 9th hole to move to 8 under par, and within two shots of Sobron.
Andre recorded costly bogeys on the 11th and 13th and was unable to convert a two metre birdie putt on the 18th, which would have tied her for the lead. Maria Parra, who received an invitation to compete in this week’s event, finished with a birdie on the final hole to finish tied for 2nd place with Andre. Sobron played the final hole conservatively, just requiring a par to claim the title.
“I looked at the leaderboards on the 9th and the 14th. I didn’t know the score on the 18th but it was better to play on the left side, as the trouble is on the right.”
“I played not very good and not really bad. I needed to hole more putts but I’m happy. I have been playing very well and last year I played very well the LETAS events so I felt that I was ready to win.”
France’s Alexandra Vilatte shot a final round of 68, to finish in a tie for 4th place, with Belgian amateur Diane Bailleux (70) at 6 under par, 213.
The LET Access Series next moves to Switzerland for the ASGI Ladies Open, which takes place at Gams-Werdenberg Golf Club, near Zurich, from the 28 – 30 April.
