England’s Hannah Screen is ready for one of the most important weeks in her golf career so far.
After last week’s win at the Calatayud Ladies Open, the 24-year-old squeezed her way into the sixth spot on the LETAS Order of Merit, a shift the Englishwoman was not expecting.
Speaking about last week, Screen said: “My game was great all week, the last day was tough. I’m relieved and happy that I got across the line.
“Going into the final event and being in the top six is exciting. I’m close to the incredible goal of earning an LET card.”
In Calatayud, Screen secured her first professional win after beating Germany’s Verena Gimmy in a two-hole play-off.
Now the Greater London based player is ready for repeated success in Zaragoza but is aware she can’t get carried away.
“I can’t get ahead of myself though as anything could happen. I want to play some good golf and I’m proud of myself.
“My 11-year-old brother Jeffrey is the proudest that his big sister has won a professional sports event. He thinks it is so cool.”
Screen’s season has been a Cinderella story as the golfer started the year with limited status on tour but after four top ten finishes including being runner up at the LETAS Link Series at Ramside Hall she is now on the brink of earning her 2024 LET card.
“I feel calm right now going into this week. I want to view it as an opportunity not a threat. Everything is so close on the Order of Merit.
“There is a bunch of great golfers out here and if I’m able to make it in the top six by the end of the week that is an absolute bonus.
“I was looking at accommodation in Morocco with my dad the other day and was convinced that I was just there for the final stage which is all I’ve wanted all year.”
Over a year ago, Screen announced publicly that she wasn’t going down the professional route but was persuaded by local members at her golf club that she was making the wrong decision and now the 24-year-old has no regrets.
“As Billy Jean King said, pressure is a privilege, and it really is. Just even feeling some pressure this week has been great. Whatever happens out there happens and I’m not going to be upset either way.”
108 players will tee it up at Real Golf De Club La Penaza and play will start tomorrow at 8:40am.
