PLAYERS BLOG: Annika Nykanen´s Winter Fitness Diary

It’s the beginning of February, and it’s about two months until the new season once again starts, can’t wait!

I have been practicing indoors from the start of December and before that we spent a ”kick-off” week in Sicily with the Finnish National Team.

My Weekly Schedule:

Usually my weekly schedule is almost the same every week. Golf wise, from Monday to Friday, I practice with either one of my coaches. We practice indoors, so we work a lot with Trackman, etc. so we’ll get as much information from the swing and the flight of the ball. When the practice is really technical, I like to split it to smaller sessions, so sometimes I have two sessions in a day.

Physical Practise:

Physical practice is something I’ve learned to love during this autumn and winter. My physical coach is the best one ever, she’s so inspiring and always gets the best out of me during the practice. We try to meet once a week, so she can see my progress and for example make changes to my workouts. Most of the workouts we do are CrossFit-like, it has really helped me to become a better athlete from head to toe 🙂 Without her, I go to the gym about 3 to 4 times in a week. The rest days I do stretching and try to keep my body as fresh as possible 🙂

Here is one of the workouts we do:

25min AMRAP (as many rounds as possible)

1 front squat, 1 burpee, 2 front squats, 2 burpees, 3 front squats, 3 burpees……

I can tell, after that it feels like you’ve done some training!

Winter Season:

Winter season is also a good opportunity to do stuff that you don’t have a chance to do during summer when tournaments and travelling to them takes most of your time. I’m a huge hockey fan, so now it’s the best time to follow passionately my favourite team’s (Helsingin Jokerit) road in Kontinental Hockey League, KHL.

Hopefully the road ends well 😉
