Austria’s Katharina Muehlbauer carded a round of 69 (-3) on Vasterby Links course to maintain her lead and extend it by three shots.
It was a slow start for LETAS’ third ranked player with a dropped shot on the second, but Muehlbauer soon pulled back with two more birdies on the front nine and matched it with two on the back.
Speaking about her round, the 27-year-old said: “It was a solid day. I hit a lot of greens and to be honest I didn’t have those typical links course chips which really saved the day.
“Overall, I’m happy with the result. Not that I wasn’t expecting it but I know for me at least that course is so much harder.”
Muehlbauer currently sits third on the LETAS Order of Merit and enters this tournament from a runner-up position at the Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge where she lost in a play off to 15-year-old French amateur Alice Kong.
“I had the same attitude as yesterday. I feel great with my game. I know my putting is good again and I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.”
For the next two rounds, all the players making the cut will first play 18 holes of Vasterby Links again followed by 18 holes of Landeryd Masters on Saturday’s final showdown.
“Tomorrow the forecast is different. I think the rain forecasted will make the greens softer. Its different going into the third day and having two days to go. I won’t look at the scores because a lot can happen in 36 holes.
“I will just go in with the exact same attitude as the last few days. It’s always great to lead. I don’t mind being in the lead, it just shows that I’ve done a good job today.”
Swedish amateur Nora Sundberg put in an impressive performance at Masters to card a flawless round of 67( -5) to sit three shots of the lead.
The Stanford Cardinal athlete rolled in five birdies on her front nine and shot nine pars in a row on the back to sit in second place
“I haven’t been in this position in a long time to chase the lead. I don’t feel any pressure on me right now.
“This is my first tournament in a couple of months so I’m just happy to play golf again and not put any pressure on myself.”
Sundberg has an impressive amateur record having been part of both the Junior Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup winning teams and was the 2023 European Girls’ Team individual champion while representing Sweden at the national level.
“Tomorrow I think will be about strategy at Vasterby. I hopefully can hit some good irons and not make any stupid mistakes and make some putts.”
Sundberg is joined by her father on the bag this week who she credits as great company.
“He is a golfer, but I wouldn’t trust him. He is a good buddy for the golf course. We had some people watching us out there and I hope to have more spectators on my side tomorrow.”
One strokes behind lies Sundberg’s compatriot Sweden’s Isabell Ekstrom who carded a round of par at Vasterby Links to sit solo third.
“My round today was solid. I hit a lot of good shots I just wasn’t dialled in on the yardages so gave my self a couple tough up and downs coming in.
“For tomorrow I’m just going to continue doing the same thing. Stay present and believe in myself.
“There is still a lot of golf left to play but I’ve put myself in a good position and I’m looking forward to the next coming days.”
Swedish amateur Ebba Liljeberg fired a flawless round of 67 (-5) to climb 32 places up the leaderboard on a sunny second day in Sweden.
“I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens and then I made some good putts. So it was pretty good overall today.
“It’s really fun to play this event and I think it’s good to play on a higher level. I’m going to college in August, so it’s good to play with people that are better than me.”
Liljeberg just finished high school in Helsingborg and is excited to start at the University of Missouri in autumn.
“It’s a fun event and to play on two courses is fun. It’s challenging, but I think it’s good for you.
“Tomorrow I will just try to stay calm and just have a lot of patience out there because the courses are pretty hard.”
Alongside Liljeberg on four-under-par after two rounds is Swiss professional Elena Colombo.
Germany’s Hannah Karg sits solo sixth on three-under-par whilst England’s Gemma Clews, Charlotte Heath and Morocco’s Lina Belmati all sit tied seventh on two-under-par.
62 players made the cut which stood at +4.
The third round of the PGA of Sweden Championship begins at 7:00 local time with the leaders going out at 13:36.
