Meghan MacLaren
England’s Meghan MacLaren and Joana de Sa Pireira of Portugal shot opening 68’s to tie for the lead after the first round of the VP Bank Ladies Open, at Gams Werdenberg Golf Club in Switzerland.
MacLaren is in top form with a win in the second event of the season, the Azores Ladies Open just two weeks ago. The 22-year-old teed off from the 10th, opening with six pars in a row, followed by two birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, and an eagle on the par five 18th. Two bogeys on the 339-yard par four second and the tough 6th hole, were followed with closing birdies on the 8th and 9th.
“It was good, I played well. Not much happened besides the last 3 holes, birdie, birdie, eagle. It was solid and then suddenly it changed. It’s a good course and if you are on you game, you can make birdies,” commented MacLaren.
De Sa Pereira has also started the 2017 LETAS season well with a 7th place finish in the Azores. The 26-year-old, who was born in Switzerland but now lives in France, recorded five birdies and a solitary bogey on her way to an opening round of four under par.
“I putted very well and my driving was okay. My ball striking was good and I had a great caddy, my father.”
Five players are tied for third place at three under par, Germany’s Karolin Lampert and Luisa Dittrich, Ainil Bakar from Malaysia, Spain’s Mireia Prat and Jenny Haglund of Sweden.
The highest placed Swiss player is Caroline Rominger, from St. Moritz, who shot an opening even par, 72.
