MacLaren Ahead in Azores Ladies Open

England’s Meghan Maclaren hit the front after the second round of the Azores Ladies Open at Terceira Golf Club on Terceira Island. The 23-year-old recorded another 70, to sit one ahead of France’s Eva Gilly (71) and Lucrezia Colombotto Rosso (71) of Italy, at four under par, 140.

MacLaren was a little disappointed with her round, feeling it could have been better giving the young player a greater advantage going into the final round.

“I feel it was a different day from yesterday, because today maybe I am a little more frustrated. Yesterday, I closed with two birdies and today I made a six on my 17th hole that I consider to be a hole for birdie. I’m a bit disappointed but I’m in the lead and I cannot complain, even though I feel like I have not played my best golf yet, “said last year’s Zaragoza tournament champion.

For the first time in the Azores Ladies Open history, two Portuguese players made the cut and will compete in the final round tomorrow.

Susana Ribeiro recorded a second round of 75, three over par, to lie in 13th place, whilst Joana de Sá Pereira climbed up to 9th with a 145 total (75 + 70). The Portuguese player, who lives in France, recording three birdies and one bogey in her round.

“I’m relaxed on the course because there’s no use putting pressure on myself,” de Sá Pereira commented. “I’m very happy because I battled on the course all the time, I missed 3 or 4 birdies that were relatively easy, but I made very good chips, I managed to save pars when I was a bit in a complicated situation. I was more consistent today.”

Thirty-two professionals and two amateurs made the cut, which fell at +5, 149. Play for the final round will commence at 8.30am.
