HAT-TRICK ON THE CARDS FOR FERNANDA LIRA

All eyes are on Fernanda Lira this week at the Ahlsell Trophy by Destination Jonkoping as the LET Access Series number four ranked player goes in pursuit of a hat-trick of LETAS victories.

The 30-year-old has had a month to remember claiming back-to-back wins in her last two events at the Islantilla Open and the Q-Tour Himmerland Championship Presented by Sand Spedition.

Yet with the busy schedule Lira hasn’t had much chance to soak in her success.

Lira said: “I haven’t been able to celebrate the win yet. I might give myself a hundred pound and go on a shopping spree after this week. That will be fun.”

Now it’s tournament time again as Lira gets ready for more success in Sweden at this week’s Ahlsell Trophy. 119 players will compete at Gränna Golfklubb in a co-sanctioned event with the Ahlsell Nordic Golf Tour.

“I really like the course. I think it’s going to be very challenging with the wind. I’m mindful of that.

Part of Lira’s success over the last month has been having her husband Ryan Shuttleworth on her bag. In a last-minute decision Ryan is joining Lira in Sweden this week.

“I am happy that I was able to convince him to come to Sweden this week. He is great at helping me with the numbers and knowing what the wind is going to do with my ball. It’s an advantage.

Thoughts of a hat-trick are distant in Lira’s mind as the Mexican focusses on dialling down her game as she enjoys another week in Sweden.

“I am just focussing on my game. I’m focussed on the small things and playing well. I want to let the results be, whatever comes will come.

“I like playing in Sweden. We are staying on a farm this week which is lovely and relaxing. We can see cows from our window so its fun.

“Tomorrow, with it blowing around 20 miles per hour and with the gusts, I’m just going to try and keep patient. It won’t be easy golf out there.”

Lira gets her hat-trick campaign underway at 12:38 local time tomorrow alongside LETAS Order of Merit leader Amalie Leth-Nissen and Czechia’s Patricie Mackova.

The Ahlsell Trophy by Destination Jonkoping takes place 6-8 August at Granna Golfklubb.
