ESCOBAR DOMINGO EXCITED FOR A FUN WEEK IN SPAIN

Spanish rookie Marina Escobar Domingo is excited for this week’s Islantilla Open, an event which has been circled in her calendar for a while.

Held at Islantilla Golf Resort, the event will see 126 players tee it up for the largest prize fund in LETAS history of €100,000.

“I am very excited for this week. I have a great group that I’m travelling with, and I have so many friends in the field as well.

“Being back in the good weather, having good food and being with good people is amazing.”

Escobar Domingo is in good company this week and has four-time LET winner Nuria Iturrioz on the bag.

“We met each other at an LET event; she has some weeks off and beyond hanging out with us Spanish players she wants to learn from caddying for her own game and she’s a fun energy on the bag.”

Escobar Domingo enters this event with some good results behind her in the Swedish stretch of events where she finished tied 9th and 38th respectively at the last two events.

Sweden was pretty good. I played the last two events and the first week was solid. I got a little uncomfortable in the course towards the end of the second week, so I was happy that I got a couple days before to see my coach and work on some stuff.”

Despite playing at home, Escobar Domingo has never played at Islantilla before and is excited for a new challenge but is happy with the familiarity of the course.

“I’ve never played here before. It’s going to be hot, a week of wet towels and ice water. The layout is like what I’m used to playing in the south of Spain. It feels more familiar.

“Outside of the golf, it will be fun, we want to go shopping, we want to go to the beach, we want to do many things. We won’t have time for everything outside of golf but it’s going to be a fun week.”

Islantilla has the largest prize fund the Tour has seen and that is a big deal for the players.

“Having a bigger prize fund is motivating. It shows that there is support for us and for our events. I think we are all going to try and play our best.”

Escobar Domingo currently sits 30th on the LETAS Order of Merit with two top 10 finishes and seventh on the Rookie of the Year rankings. Now, the Spaniard hopes to build on her good results.

“I’m happy with my consistency this season. I have been close to being in position a couple of times. I want to see myself more in contention. I know I have it somewhere here, close to me and it will come soon.”

The Islantilla Open begins on Thursday 17 July and will conclude on Saturday 19 July.
