Carlota Ciganda |
Spain’s Carlota Ciganda shot an opening 68, to finish at 5 under par in the first round of the Murcia Ladies Open at the La Manga Club in Spain, to lead by one shot from Wales’ Sarah Jones.
The Spaniard put together a spectacular round of golf, which included eight birdies and a double bogey in overcast and breezy conditions.
The 21-year-old from Pamplona turned professional in May after finishing her studies at Arizona State University. One of Spain’s best ever amateur golfers, Ciganda, tied for second on her professional debut at the LET’s Tenerife Ladies Match Play this year and also finished 10th in the Open de Espana Feminino back in September.
Sarah Jones, who earlier this year finished tied 11th at the LETAS Ladies Open, is returning to golf after an injury had taken her away from competitive golf. The Welshwoman is nicely placed after scoring six birdies on her way to an opening 69.
Seven players finished below par on the opening day, including exciting young Danish amateur, Daisy Nielsen (-2), Ireland’s Marian Riordan (-3) and Danielle McVeigh (-2), Spain’s Maria Beautell (-1) and defending champion Julie Tvede, who opened with a 1 under par 72.
Play continues at 9am tomorrow for Round 2.
