18-year-old Helen Briem has made history after securing her third win this week at the Santander Golf Tour-Avila after rounds of 70, 62 and 70.
Not only did Briem break the course record after a fabulous round of 62(-10) yesterday and equal the lowest 18-hole score record on tour, but the German has also done what others can only dream about, win three professional tournaments in a row as an amateur.
On a sunny final day, Briem showed she meant business after a birdie on the first. Three more birdies and one bogey gave her a two-shot lead after the first nine.
A double bogey on 10 put the pressure on but a bounce back birdie on eleven demonstrated Briem’s unwavering ability to not be fazed.
Two consecutive birdies on 14 and 15 were followed by bogeys on 16 and 18 but Briem over three days had already done enough.
Speaking about her historic win, Briem said: “Today I knew I only had one shot, I enjoyed it and I’m happy, I got into the flow and had momentum out there.”
In 2021, Briem made an impression after placing second in the Santander Golf Tour Barcelona and is delighted to go one better in her first Santander event since then.
“The last time I played a Santander golf tour event I was 16, quite a while ago so it was great to come back and go one better than last time.”
“Right now, we head to the airport and fly back as I am going to play for my team tomorrow. So, the celebration will be on hold, but I will have friends around and I hope after we can celebrate.”
Briem has been unstoppable the last month with an exemplary tournament record.
“This last month, it couldn’t have gone any better. Starting with the LET event in Germany, then nearly winning the LET event in Sweden to three wins on LET Access. This is amazing, I’m so happy.”
Yet one person has been beside Briem the whole time, her father Jochen who has caddies for her.
“The support my dad has given me is incredible, I mean we started not with the intention to be professional but starting golf together to have fun. It’s incredible what he does for me on a daily basis.”
Next up for Helen is taking her exams and competing for Germany at the European Amateur Team championship, but one things for sure professional golf has met its future.
Swedish star Kajsa Arwefjall had her first runner-up as a professional finishing on 13- under-par after rounds of 70,66 and 70.
Spain’s Elena Hualde and Danish amateur Cecilie Leth-Nissen, who played together in the penultimate group finished tied third on 12-under-par.
England’s Megan Dennis finished solo fifth on 11-under-par with Netherland’s Nikki Hofstede sitting in sixth.
It was a good day for the Leth-Nissen’s with younger sister Amalie finishing tied seventh alongside France’s Ariane Klotz, Netherland’s Pasqualle Coffa and England’s Billie-Jo Smith on seven-under-par.
LETAS now moves over to Sweden for the summer with the MoreGolf Mastercard Open starting on the 27th ofJune.
