Amateurs Continue To Shine As Thunderstorms Suspend Play At VP Bank Ladies Open Second Round

Play was suspended late in the day as thunderstorms hit the GC Gams-Werdenberg course. Opening round leaders Klara Wildhaber and Elena Moosmann continue to hold a share of the lead and are joined by fellow amateur Isabella Holpfer on six-under-par at the close of play.

19-year-old Wildhaber is one-under for the day through 12 holes before the weather curtailed her round. Austrian Holpfer will join Wildhaber on the tee tomorrow morning having also failed to complete the round. She joins the Swiss pair at the top of the leaderboard, lying two-under for the day after three consecutive birdies on 9, 10 and 11 before a rare missed putt lead to a bogey at the 13th.

Elena Moosmann, the only one of the leaders to complete the round, backed up a superb five-under opening round with a one-under-par 71 in tricky early morning conditions at the Swiss course. The 17-year-old was incredibly accurate off the tee and but for a few loose iron shots could have scored even lower. Reflecting on her round, the Swiss youngster said:

“I played good tee shots. My irons at the beginning were not so good but then I figured out what I did wrong and my putting was no so good like yesterday, but it was fine. It was a bit more windy but it was fine and I like to play in the rain so it was OK.”

Despite facing some of the day’s worst conditions with an early tee-time, the 17-year-old held her nerve to hold the clubhouse lead and will enjoy a late start tomorrow having completed the full eighteen holes before the storms hit.

Play will commence at 8.15am tomorrow with the unfinished second rounds to be completed. Following this will be a re-draw for the final day’s matches.

Cold conditions and a possible dusting of snow are forecast for Sunday but with little chance of a repeat of the thunderstorms, it’s hoped a full day’s will be possible. The amateur trio will hope to transfer their stroke play excellence into the Sunday’s match-play, and with home crowd support few would bet against the inexperienced group stealing the show once again.
