AMATEUR GRANT RETURNS TO DEFEND GOLFUPPSALA OPEN TITLE

The Swedish leg of the 2021 LET Access Series season continues this week with the GolfUppsala Open.

After last week’s match play, the format returns back to traditional stroke play at the Söderby in the GolfUppsala resort.

The 106-player field will compete for a total purse of €40,000 in a 54-hole stroke play format with the cut for the 45 lowest professional plus ties and all amateurs on the same score after 36 holes.

Last year’s winner, Swedish amateur Linn Grant is back to defend the title and the amateur World No. 3 has since triumphed in three collegiate tournaments in the United States, finished third in the Scandinavian Mixed and sixth in the recent European Ladies’ Amateur Championship.

Grant said: “It’s always nice to come back to a place where you’ve had good experiences and results. Knowing the course from last year will hopefully be an advantage this week.

“I love to compete in Sweden, I often feel most comfortable playing here. For me, a win always shows that I’m on a good path in my journey of getting better. I always go into a tournament with the goal to win and therefore I expects myself to always do my best to give that goal a fair chance.”

Three LETAS winners from this season will also tee it up in Uppsala. England’s Lily May Humphreys, who won the Golf Flanders LETAS Trophy in her very first start on LETAS and secured eighth place at the Santander Golf Tour Zaragoza two weeks ago.

Another English player Rachael Goodall secured her third LETAS win in Zaragoza and is currently sitting in the third spot in the LETAS Order of Merit with 647.69 points behind Scotland’s Gabrielle Macdonald, who has 741.25 points.

The Order of Merit leader Nina Pegova took last week off to prepare for the second of five tournaments in Sweden.

The Russian currently has a significant lead in the rankings with 1,037.50 points thanks to her consistency – she has secured three second places and another top-10 spot this season.

“I had a busy July because I wasn’t only playing LETAS events but also some events in Russia. So, I decided to take a week off and spent it at home in Moscow, I had some rest from golf because I had to organize a lot of things for the upcoming weeks,” said Pegova.

“I am always excited to play in Sweden because the courses here are always interesting and tournaments are very well organized. But I nearly withdraw from this tournament because the airline lost my clubs and didn’t know where they were until I got them today!”
