ANNELIE SJOHOLM READY TO DEFEND VÄSTERÅS OPEN TITLE

The Swedish stretch of events continues this week with the LETAS stars teeing it up at the Anna Nordqvist Västerås Open By SmartProvider.

Västerås Golf Club plays host to the eighth event of the 2021 LETAS season which sees 92 players from 19 countries compete for a purse of €35,000 in a 54-hole stroke play format.

A total of five LETAS winners from this season will play in Västerås, as well as the top-5 players on the LETAS Order of Merit.

Sweden’s Annelie Sjoholm will defend her title from 2019 when she triumphed on her home course after finishing on -6 with rounds of 70, 72 and 68, and is looking forward to teeing up in her home country once again.

The defending champion said: “My win in 2019 at my home course is my best golfing memory in my career. It was truly a great feeling to win in front of the home crowd and all the people I knew since growing up.”

“I have been longing to defend this title for two years now and I’m more than ready and looking forward to it. I’m hoping people will come out to watch the tournament days and cheering me on.”

“Since this has always been my home course I know where to place the ball and where you get a good opportunity from. Some greens are a bit challenging, but I think that’s what gives the course its charm.”

Amateur Kajsa Arwefjäll secured her maiden professional win in a playoff in last week’s GolfUppsala Open. The Swedish talent is looking for another strong finish in Västerås before she heads back to college in the United States.

“I feel great after last week’s win,” she said. “It’s always exciting to go out there and play. The course is quite wet, so you don’t get a lot of roll on your drives which makes the course longer. But overall I’ll just go out there and try to have a positive mindsent every day.”

Arwefjäll won in Soderby after a play-off with compatriot Sofie Bringner, who secured her maiden win the week before at the Big Green Egg Swedish Matchplay Championship. Bringner is hoping to maintain consistency in the third Swedish LETAS event in a row.

“I’ve been feeling good playing here in Sweden and I’m looking forward to the week here in Västerås. The greens and fairways are in a great shape here and I just love the layout of the course,” she said.

England’s Lily May Humphreys was victorious at the Golf Flanders LETAS Trophy earlier in the year, and the leading player in the LETAS Rookie of the Year rankings has since placed eighth in Santander Golf Tour Zaragoza and T16 in last week’s event.

“I’m just trying to do the best I can each week,” Humphreys said. “It feels good to have the win already as a professional and I am working towards playing like I did that weel every week. It would feel amazing to qualify for the Skaftö Open and compete on the LET again.”

The players competing in Sweden also have a chance to compete for two spots in the Skaftö Open (26–29 August). The top two players (not otherwise exempt) after the five events in Sweden will have the opportunity to play in the LET event the week after the PGA Championship By Trelleborgs Kommun.
