De Roey looks to breakthrough at home in Belgium
The fourth edition of the Belfius Ladies Open is gets underway this week at the Rinkven Golf Club in Belgium.
The €35,000 event was first played in 2014 as the Royal Belgian Golf Federation LETAS Trophy. This is the third playing of the event in Gravenwezel, just an hour’s drive from the capital Brussels.
The par 71 layout is Manon De Roey’s home course. Turning professional in 2015 after a stellar amateur career, the Belgium national is enjoying a career year on the LETAS with three top-ten finishes from seven starts. On the eve of the Belfius Ladies Open, she spoke about her season so far and the week ahead.
“It’s always nice to play at your home course. I know it well as a result of playing and practicing here everyday when I am home.”
The twenty-six year old who played college golf at the University of New Mexico, is currently sixth on the order of merit. Her best finish this season is a T3 at the Forget Foundation PGA Championship in Sweden earlier in the year.
Coming into this week, De Roey feels good about her game. “Having some people to come out and watch me is always fun. I have been close to a win this season but never managed to close it out.”
What then would winning at home mean? Manon chooses to stay in the present. “Winning here in Belgium would be very special, but I am going to keep doing the same things.”
The Belfius Ladies Open will begin on Thursday with 115 competitors taking part, including ten national elite amateurs.
