This week’s Ribeira Sacra Patrimonio de la Humanidad International Ladies Open will see the largest field assembled in the event’s four-year history, with 117 competitors from 27 different countries competing from the 11 – 13 May, at Augas Santas Balneario and Golf Resort in Lugo, Spain.
Among the 23 Spanish players in the field will be Carolina Gonzalez Garcia, who claimed her first win at last week’s ASGI Ladies Open in Switzerland and the current LET Access Series Order of Merit leader, Luna Sobron. The 2014 European amateur champion is in great form and looking forward to playing in her home country.
“It’s great to play in Spain again and I’m playing well so I think it could be a good week. Although I didn’t play well in Morocco, I didn’t have good luck and I just need some confidence.”
“I still feel that I can win the tournament next week. It’s only the third LETAS tournament of the year so it’s just the beginning. I’ll try to play well and enjoy it.”
Former champion, Spain’s Mireia Prat who won the title in 2013 and went on to top the LETAS final Order of Merit, will also be competing and will be one of a number of players making the trip directly from the LET’s Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco. Top Spanish amateur, Maria Parra, will be another of those players who will be feeling confident after finishing in a tie for 9th place in the Moroccan event.
“I’m so excited because I’ll play in my country and my father and uncle will go with me. I’ll play with my friends from Spain so I’m really excited about that.
I live in Andalucía and I’ve never played the course but the others tell me that it’s really good so I hope to play well.
I’m happy with my result in Morocco because I played well apart from on the last day, when I shot three over, but the weather was really bad. I was happy to play with the professional ladies.”
Norway’s Tonje Daffinrud, currently ranked 3rd on the LETAS Order of Merit and a two time winner during the 2014 LETAS season, will also be a strong contender, as will Michele Thomson from Scotland, who will be back to defend her title.
The 5,142 metre, 18 hole golf course includes two par 5s, 11 par 4s and five par 3s with an overall par 70 and is situated on a thermal spa. The resort lies in a valley between the Central Orensano Mountains, while the Carabelos River comes into play on several holes.
