AIG

Pre-qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open occurred on Sunday the 28th ofJuly and saw many LETAS players get one step closer to their dreams of competing at a major.

The AIG Women’s Open, one of the five major championships in women’s professional golf, will be held at the iconic Old Course in St Andrews this summer from 21-25 August.

Pre-Qualifying took place at Delamere Forest for the first time and the Cheshire course with its fast-running fairways and subtle, yet challenging contouring proved to be a great test for the golfers.

22 places were available into Final Qualifying where a minimum of three golfers will earn a spot to play in St. Andrews.

England’s Lily May Humphreys, who won the LETAS Order of Merit in 2021, produced the strongest round to finish the day five-under-par.

England’s Gemma Clews, who earned an LET card through LETAS last year, enjoyed playing on her home course and finished second on two-under-par with only one bogey on the scorecard.

Four players tied for third on one-under-par including three LETAS players, England’s Ellen Hume who is enjoying her rookie season on LETAS, Scotland’s Hannah McCook and Australia’s Stephanie Bunque.

Isle of Man’s Ana Dawson and Scotland’s Jane Turner both finished in the top 10 and secured a spot for final qualifying held at Crail Golfing Society in Fife.

Other LETAS players who succeeded in getting into the final stage were Wales’ Lea-Anne Bramwell, England’s Sarah Gee, Rebecca Earl, Nicola Slater, Japan’s Maho Hayakawa, Scotland’s Heather McRae and Australia’s Kelsey Bennett who had a brilliant comeback back nine.

Final qualifying takes place on Monday 19 August where after 18 holes we will see which golfers have their dreams come true of playing on an iconic stage at St. Andrews, the host of the tournament for the third time in its rich history.

Nineteen different venues have hosted the AIG Women’s Open since its inception in 1976 but perhaps none more revered than the famed links at St Andrews.

LETAS returns this week for the Smorum Ladies Open on the 2nd of August.
