England’s Gemma Clews had a tough year at Brocket Hall in 2022 but is excited to tee it up again at this year’s Rose Ladies Open.
Last year the 28-year-old missed the cut by one, but the third-ranked Order of Merit player is determined to turn things around this year.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Clews said: “I’m excited, it’s always nice to play in England. It’s not that close to home for me but it’s still nice to just be in the UK and not have to get on a plane for a change.
“I struggled last year and had a few different things going on. Whilst I didn’t have my best week, I still really enjoyed the golf course, so I’ve been looking forward to coming back here.
“We’re well looked after by everyone here. It is one of the best events we play in, and we’re treated like royalty.
“I’ve just been really looking forward to. So, coming back here and giving it another go is exciting.”
Clews has had an excellent season so far with three top-10 finishes including second place at the AMUNDI Czech Ladies Challenge and a long-awaited win at the Smorum Ladies Open in Denmark.
Now the Manchester based player will be looking to consolidate her space in the top-six on the LETAS Order of Merit and win a coveted LET card for 2024.
“I’ve tried to not think about the Order of Merit points really, which is quite difficult, like a lot of the other girls will get it as well when they go home and see different people it’s the first thing they mentioned.
“I will just keep doing what I’ve been doing this year and just take each week as it comes really, I’m in a good space.”
It’s been a week off for LETAS players before going into this tournament but a welcome one after four weeks in Sweden and Denmark.
Speaking about her preparations for this tournament, Clews said: “I did a few different things, I practiced, I played quite a bit with a few different people. I regripped my clubs as well as they were very long overdue. Met with different friends and had chilled coffees. Yeah, it has just been a nice week at home.
“The forecast is great for the week which is nice for a change I think feel like this year I’ve never worn my waterproof so much.
“It’s amazing to have the best weather and events so far this year in England. It is pretty good so I can rub it into everyone else.
“Now I’m looking forward to it and ready to embrace the challenge.”
